Inner Mongolia Sets New Record for Sunflower Yield Per Acre at 708.4 Jin

On October 17, the 20-day Inner Mongolia Sunflower High-Yield Competition and Yield Measurement event came to a close. The actual measured yield of sunflowers in Hesheng Village, Manhui Town, Hangjinhouqi, Bayannur City, was 708.4 jin per acre, 8.78 jin higher than last year's highest sunflower yield per acre, setting a new record for Inner Mongolia's sunflower yield.

It is reported that this high-yield competition followed the procedures of self-measurement by counties and districts, verification by prefectures and cities, and re-measurement by the autonomous region. It combined theoretical yield measurement with actual harvest yield measurement, and the yield measurement evaluation information included elements such as the test location, area, variety, field management measures, and yield measurement results. During the self-measurement and verification by prefectures and cities, the yield measurement team strictly followed the sunflower yield measurement method in the "2024 Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region Main Grain and Oil Crop High-Yield Competition Implementation Plan". They conducted field sampling and theoretical yield measurements on 20 high-yield competition plots reported by seven counties and districts, measured indicators such as the plant spacing, row spacing, average diameter of sunflower heads, manual threshing and impurity removal, and number of seeds per head in the sunflower fields one by one. They calculated the average number of seeds per head and the effective number of plants in the field, and took the collected samples indoors for drying, weighing of 100-grain weight, and checking of the theoretical yield per acre. Finally, they analyzed, summarized, and ranked the theoretical yield measurement results of each high-yield competition site.

In addition, the yield measurement expert team also conducted actual harvest re-measurements on the high-yield fields with top theoretical yield levels, including the Fifth Cooperative of Hesheng Village, Manhui Town, Hangjinhouqi; Menghan Village, Bayinbaolig Town, Urad Rear Flag; and Hongguang Village, Langshan Town, Linhe District. The expert team inspected the field growth, selected three representative samples, with each sample area not less than 30 square meters. They marked the samples for artificial sampling, sunflower head threshing, cleaning, impurity removal, and weighing. They used a moisture meter to determine the moisture content, calculated the average value, and then converted it to a standard moisture content of 12% to obtain the final yield. The average yield of sunflowers in the three re-measured locations was above 660 jin per acre, which was a pleasing result.

Sunflowers are an advantageous and characteristic oil crop in Inner Mongolia, with an annual planting area of nearly 8 million acres. Bayannur City has an annual sunflower planting area of 4 million acres, accounting for more than 50% of the autonomous region and more than 25% of the country, making it the largest edible sunflower planting base in China. By conducting sunflower high-yield competition activities, a number of high-yield examples have been discovered and demonstration models have been established, driving a large-scale and balanced increase in sunflower yields across the region.
